Inhibitory Effect of Adsorption of Streptococcus mutans onto Scallop-Derived Hydroxyapatite

Hydroxyapatite adsorbs various substances, but little is known about the effects on oral bacteria of adsorption onto hydroxyapatite derived from scallop shells. In present study, we analyzed Streptococcus mutans scallop-derived hydroxyapatite. When was mixed with S. mutans, a high proportion bacterial cells adsorbed in time-dependent manner. An RNA sequencing analysis showed that upregulation genes resulted abnormalities pathways involved glycogen and histidine metabolism biosynthesis compared absence not killed, growth inhibited. Electron microscopy morphological changes Our results suggest shells ability for mutans. This also caused gene expression related to metabolic biosynthetic processes, including which may result change surface layer inhibition bacteria.
